THE FROGGATTS OF BREWHOUSE YARD:James Froggatt 1770-1824James was born in 1770 to James FROGGATT and Ellen PEACH. He was baptised on 12 Sept 1770 at Wirksworth, Derbyshire::
Marriage of James to Mary LOWEJames married Mary Lowe at St Nicholas on 5 October 1801.
Both James and Mary lived in Brewhouse Yard, and they appear to have continued to reside there with James' father (James senior and second wife Ann) until James’ death in 1808 and Ann’s in 1814. Note that the Land Tax continued to be paid to Cornelius LAUNDAR by a James Froggatt until at least 1818, which presumably was James (junior). James and Mary had six children, only two of whom survived to adulthood.
James’ occupation at the time of marriage is unknown. However in Hodson’s Directory of 1814 and Pigot’s of 1815 James Froggatt is listed as a Wharfinger, of Brewhouse Yard. This is the last record for James until his death on 2/1/1824. A Wharfinger was usually a person who owned or managed a wharf. We know that there was an extensive set of wharves – The Duke’s Wharves – opposite Brewhouse Yard, so perhaps James managed one of these.
Mary, widow of James, is the only Froggatt recorded remaining at Brewhouse Yard in the 1841 Census. She was a “charwoman”, aged 65.
Mary died in Nottingham prior to the 1851 census. The death record of Mary Froggatt Nottingham Sep qtr 1848 is probably her. The Children of James and MaryJAMES FROGGATT (1805 – 1840)James was baptised on 20/5/1805 in Nottingham St Nicholas and married Mary Hopkin at Nottingham St Nicholas on Christmas day 25/12/1833:
The witnesses were James’ younger brother William, and Ann Hopkin who probably was Mary’s mother (see below). At this time Brewhouse Yard was still regarded as an “extra parochial place” so the description of the couple as being “Of this parish” suggests that James was not resident at BrewhouseYard at the time of marriage. The Church of St Nicholas is only 300 metres away from BHY, so James had not moved far. James died in Nottingham in 1840 (Sep qtr 15/404) at Nottingham General Hospital on 22/7/1840, the cause of death is not stated nor is his usual place of residence. I have not located a definite birth record for children of James and Mary. However, Mary and new husband James ELLIOTT are in the 1851 census at Victoria St, Nottingham with daughter Harriett aged 15 - born 1836. As James and Mary married in 1844 Harriett was from a previous marriage. Harriett died in Nottingham in 1860 or 1861. Mary his widow married James Elliott (son of Samuel Elliott, frame work knitter, deceased) on 16/7/1844 at St Mary’s Church, their residence at time of marriage for both being Malin Hill (near High Pavement). James was recorded as a gasman, Mary without occupation. The witnesses were John Hopkin and Ann Hopkin. Mary’s father was John, a tailor, so presumably the witnesses were Mary’s parents. John Hopkin is listed in Pigot’s 1830 Directory as Tailor and Habit Maker, 2 Warser Gate.
WILLIAM (I) FROGGATT (1807 – 1866)William was born 16/9/1807 at Brewhouse Yard. (The 1851 census lists this location as his place of birth).. He married Elizabeth Bowler at Nottingham St Peter in 1832. The story of William and Elizabeth continues here.
