THE FROGGATTS OF BREWHOUSE YARDANNE FROGGATT (1835 – 1866)Anne was born in Brewhouse Yard, Nottingham in 1835 to William FROGGATT and Elizabeth BOWLER:
Anne married Henry Cantelo on 25/8/1856 at Nottingham St Nicholas. Her address was Standard Hill, and his was Sneinton. Henry was a Clerk and his Father, Henry, was “Manager of factory in Calais”. The witnesses were William Froggatt and Elizabeth Froggatt, Anne’s parents.
The children of Anne and Henry:
In the 1861 census, Anne and Henry were living at Spaniel Row, adjacent to the Old Market Square in the centre of Nottingham with son Henry William and a servant. Henry was now a Silk Dealer:
Their daughter Annie was "boarding" with James and Mary ATKIN in Carlton, Notts. Although the census record appears to show Annie as 3 years old, there is the word "Mo" after the 3. This would be correct as Annie was born in late 1860. James was aged 65 and Mary 70. I do not know if there was any relationship between the Cantelo and Atkin families.
Deaths of Sarah and Anne Just prior to the death of his wife Anne, Henry and George SHARP (of Sharp and Cantelo) acquired the lease on 2 silk factories at Orchard St, New Radford. Document M4467/1 in the Nottingham Archives records the lease for 100 pound/year and dated 5/6/1866. In 1871, Henry, a widower, was living with his two children at 42 Portland Rd, Nottingham:
Marriage of Henry Cantelo Ellen MILNER
1881 census: Henry was living at 15 Burns St, Nottingham with his new wife Ellen and his father (now returned from Calais):
Daughter Annie was a boarder and musical student with Joseph M. Jones (organist and composer) of 154 Finborough Rd, London. 1891 census: 44 Addison St, Nottingham
1901 census: 7 East Circus St, which is adjacent to The Park Estate, Nottingham:
Death of Ellen: Ellen died in Nottingham in 1909 (Dec qtr, 7b/236) 1911 census: Henry and family have moved to 332 Mansfield Rd:
Henry died at 332 Mansfield Rd in 1912 (Dec qtr, Nottingham 7b/463). Children of Henry CanteloHenry William 1857-1931Henry was born in Radford in 1857. He entered the Silk business like his father. He was still living with his father in the 1901 census, aged 43. Henry married Maria Matilda BEDFORD in Chesterton, Cambrdgeshire in 1903 (Mar qtr 3b/605), and moved east to Great Yarmouth, where they were at 11 St George's Rd in the 1911 census:
Henry and Maria did not have any children. Anne Elizabeth 1860-Anne was born in late 1860 in Nottingham. By 1881 Anne was boarding in London as a musical student with Joseph M. Jones (organist and composer) of 154 Finborough Rd, London:
Annie appears to have followed a family interest in music, her grandfather’s family being well known singers in Bath in the mid-1700s and a relative – “Mademoiselle Cantelo” – was a respected classical singer in Nottingham:
Marriage to Harry COX Cox, Henry William (also known as Harry) was born Nottingham 1858, son of Alfred Wilson COX (artist and photographer) and Ellen Elizabeth PRATT. Initially, Henry William joined the family firm in St James's Street. In 1883 he moved to Birmingham to open his own studio although this venture only lasted for a few years. He then appears to have returned to Nottingham - possibly again working for the family business. Afterwards, he practised independently from his residence in Park Row, but this arrangement did not last for long. It has been said that he had an interest in photo-ceramics and if this is correct, he may well have been associated with the Midland Photo Keramic Company when they were at Beastmarket Hill in 1894-95. He acted as manager for the firm of Frederick Karoly & Co. in 1898-99. 1891 census: 49 Park Row
1901 census: 49 Park Row
1911 census: Hucknell Lane, Bulwell
Annie and Harry did not have any children. In the 1911 census they had moved from Park Row in central Nottingham to Hucknell Lane, Bulwell, where Harry was employed making electric switches. Annie was a musician (piano). Edith Ellen 1879-Edith was born in Notingham in late 1879. She remained with her parents for many years, nursing her father right to his death in 1912. Katherine Marguerite 1883-Katherine was born in Nottingham in 1883. She is living with her parents in the 1901 census, aged 17. In 1911 however, she is a patient at the oddly named "Nordrach sur Mendip" on hte Mendip Hills near Blagdon in Somerset. Nordrach was built in about 1860 and was known as Willoughby’s Farm. In
1899 two English doctors who had been successfully treated for TB at the
Nordrach Sanatorium in the Black Forest decided to pool their resources and
open their own sanatorium in Somerset. Their regime in Germany had involved
wholesome food, pasteurised milk and plenty of fresh air. Willoughby’s Farm
was reopened as the Nordrach Sanatorium. And apparently demand for its
services was so high, even at £20 per week, that the doctors decided to open
its doors even before they had finished altering the house. The patients lived
both in the house and in the many ‘villas’ dotted around the grounds.
After surviving TB and Nordrach House, Kate married Frederick William HOPE in Darlington Yorkshire in 1924 (Mar qtr, 10a/5). How she met up with Frederick is unknown. What I do know is that Frederick had been widowed in 1921. He had married Elizabeth Helen FROGGATT (my great-aunt) in 1894 and she had died in Darlington in 1921. Frederick HOPE died in Darlington on 18 July 1926, at 18 Langholm Cres. Kate survived for many years after Frederick, despite her fight with TB. Kate died on 7 February 1953, aged 69, at St James's Hospital, Leeds. Her address was given as 7 The Drive, Leeds. The informant was Harriet Sophia OVERBURY, cousin, of 12 Irwin Rd, Broadheath, Altrincham, which is just south-west of Manchester.
NOTE: Harriet Sophia Overbury was the daughter of Annie MILNER and John Foster OVERBURY. Annie's sister Ellen had married Henry CANTELO. It is also interesting to note that Annie and Ellen's older brother James Sidney MILNER was a music teacher, and in the 1901 census is shown as "Professor of Music". Anne Elizabeth Cantelo was also musical, as was most of the Cantelo family. Back to Froggatt Family History Last updated: 18/08/2010 |
