Cruise Day 12: Greenland: Ilulissat

Introduction

We arrived at the town of Ilulissat in fine weather and a balmy +5°C. There were plenty of icebergs on the horizon. In fact Ilulissat is regarded as the home of icebergs as the nearby fjord is the world's most productive source of bergs. This fjord is regarded as the source of the iceberg that sunk the Titanic in 1912. We landed at the jetty shared by fishing boats and cruise ship Zodiacs then walked up through the town, passing the old wooden Zion Church on the way. Up the hill past the "Arctic Living" sled dog centre we reached the Isfjord Centre, a large building dedicated to ice. The building was designed to allow walking access to the roof for a wide view of the fjord. From here a walking trail, mostly built up on a boardwalk, takes walkers to the edge of the fjord, overlooking the bergs. It is a fantastic sight.
