The Goodliffe Family of Nottingham

Thomas William Goodliffe - Eldest son of Arnold Goodliffe

Thomas Goodliffe

Arnold and Ann Goodliffe had 7 children. Their oldest son - Thomas William - was born in 1831 and was still living with the family at Bridlesmith Gate on the 1851 census. According to the centennial history of the Goodliffe business, Thomas had gone to Australia in 1850 at 20 years of age, but his inclusion on the 1851 census suggests this voyage was later.

The records of Unassisted Immigration to Victoria show that Thomas and Ann arrived in Melbourne in October 1853  on the ship "Tasmania".  Thomas had married Ann STAFFORD in Nottingham (listed in the Sept Qtr 7b/333) immediately before departure. His wife Ann was born in Nottingham, and she is probably the Anne living with her family at Glasshouse St, Nottingham in the 1851 census. She was aged 22 and listed as a Cloth Cap Maker. Her parents were George and Ann Stafford, and she had a younger sister, Mary.

The Victoria BDM records show:
Thomas Arnold Goodliffe was born to Thomas Goodliffe and Ann (nee STAFFORD) in Collingwood, Vic in1854
Thomas Arnold died in Collingwood, Vic, in 1854 (I am not sure that this is correct)
Thomas Arnold Goodliffe was born in Melbourne, Vic in 1855
Mary Ellen Goodliffe was born in Collingwood, Vic in 1856
Mary Ellen died in Collingwood, Vic in 1857 (this seems odd as Mary was on the ship returning to England in 1861)
William Stafford Goodliffe was born in Melbourne, in 1860.

The Victoria Shipping Register records the family, comprising Mr & Mrs Goodliffe (aged 43 & 39), Thomas 5 years and Mary 2 years plus infant , returning to England on the Owen Glendower, departing February 1861.

After their return to Nottingham, Thomas and Anne had 4 more children, so their family was:

Thomas Arnold 1855 Australia
Mary Ellen (Nellie) 1858 Australia
William Stafford 1861 Australia
John Frederick 1862 Nottingham
Frances Marguerite 1864 Nottingham
Anne Lilian 1865 Nottingham
Arthur Herbert 1870 Nottingham

By the 1871 census, Thomas, Anne and family were living at 40 Bridlesmith Gate, Nottingham:

Thomas Goodliffe Head 39 Provision Merchant
Anne Wife 42   Nottingham
Mary Ellen  daughter 13   Collingwood, Australia
William Stafford son 10   Australia, Victoria
John Frederic son 8   Nottingham
Francis Marguerite daughter 6   Nottingham
Anne  daughter 5   Nottingham
Arthur Herbert son 1   Nottingham

Their oldest son, Thomas Arnold, was in Sheffield in 1871, his story is recorded below.
Notes about the other offspring are below

In the 1881 census, still at 40 Bridlesmith Gate were:

Anna Goodliffe 50 Head
Nellie 22 -
John F 18 Clerk
Margaret 16 Scholar
Lilian 15 Scholar
Arthur 11 Scholar

I cannot find Thomas or son William Stafford  in the 1881 census. They may be there but a transcription error has hidden them, or they were overseas at census date.

Thomas died in Nottingham in 1889, aged 58 years.

In the 1891 census at 32 Nottingham Rd, Basford, we have:

Anne Goodliffe 62 Head, Widow
Arthur Herbert 21 Provision Merchant
Mary Jane Hallam 17 Servant

and in the 1901 census, at 32 Nottingham Rd, Basford were:

Anne Goodliffe 74 Head, Widow, living on own means
Eva Brown 24 Servant - Lady companion
Elizabeth Shepherd 16 Servant

Anne (Stafford) Goodliffe died in 1909, aged 82.

The children of Thomas and Anne Goodliffe

Thomas Arnold Goodliffe

The oldest son of Thomas and Anne, Thomas Arnold is recorded in the 1871 census at 39-43 Snig Hill, Sheffield, working as a pawnbroker's assistant, aged 15.

Thomas Arnold returned to Australia on the ship Durham, arriving in Melbourne in March 1875.

More about Thomas and his family is on these pages.

Mary Ellen (Nellie) Goodliffe married in Nottingham in Sep 1882 to Edward HICKLING, from Lea, near Matlock, Derbyshire. They had at least 5 children:

Frank Goodliffe Hickling Sep 1883
Lilian Maud Mar 1885
Leonard Edward Sep 1886
Arthur Stanley Mar 1890
Henry Doald Mar 1892

In both the 1891 and 1901 censuses they resided at 14 Annesley Grove, Nottingham. In 1891 Edward was a buyer for a lace warehouse. By 1901 he was a lace manufacturer, owning the factory. Their son Leonard married in Jun 1908 and Frank married in Jun 1910 to Antoinette BANCROFT.

William Stafford Goodliffe married in Nottingham in 1884 to Adelina HALLAM. Adelina died in late 1886, aged 24. Their daughter Adelina Goodliffe died in late 1886 also, suggesting Adelina (snr) might have died in childbirth.

William Stafford married again in Nottingham in 1889 to Julia ALLEN.
In the 1891 census they lived at 4 Colliery Rd, Wilford. The family consisted of William (a hosiery warehouseman), Julia (23), Addie (Adelina), (4), Ethel M (1) and Emily Hudson a servant (13).

William Stafford died in early 1897, aged 36.

In 1901 Julia was a widow living at 106 Arkwright St Nottingham working as a "fancy draper" from home, with Adeline 14, Ethel M. 11, Maud M. 9, and Anne 7.

John Frederick married in Basford in 1884 to  Mary Jane MILLINGTON.

Frederick Goodliffe

John Frederick, later known as Frederick took over the house at 40 Bridlesmith Gate where he was born, remaining there until 1897. In 1887 his father's health failed and he took over full control of the provision business. His father Thomas died in 1889 and Frederick soon bought the family interest and became sole owner of the family firm.

On the 1891 census, the family was living at 40 Bridlesmith Gate:
John F Goodliffe 28 Head Provision Dealers Manager
Mary J. 29 wife
Dora Gwendoline 5
Margaret 4
Constance 2
Annie Edith 8 months

In 1902 the 50 years lease on 40 Bridlesmith Gate expired, so Frederick moved to new premises at 20 Wollaton Street, where he still operated in 1927 when he wrote up the centennial history of the firm. In the 1910 Wrights Directory, Frederick is listed as "Trading as "Reliable"", with Telephone Number of 523. His home was "Premier House", Gregory Boulevard, telephone 2022.

Frances Margaret (Frances Margeurite): It appears that Frances married a William CLARK(E) in Nottingham in 1885 (although the marriage is not in the BDM  index), and emigrated to Tacoma, Washington, USA in about 1889.

Anne Lilian Goodliffe married in Nottingham in 1889 to George SPRECKLEY.

In the 1891 census they lived at 57 Cranmer St, Nottingham. The family consisted of George (30), Lace Warehouseman, Annie (25), George Harold (5 months) and Ada Lee (25) a visitor (nurse).

In 1901 the family were living at 233 Woodborough Rd, Nottingham and consisted of George (40), Lace Manufacturer, Anne (35), George Harold (10), Arthur Percy (7), Annie Margaret (6 months) and Sarah Pernham (14) servant.
