John Goodliffe was born 23 November 1832 in the family home of Lambley Lodge near Belton in the County of Rutland. His birth was first recorded at the Morcott and Barrowden Baptist Chapel which the extended Goodliffe family attended, but on 1 August 1847 John and his siblings were formally baptised at the local Church of England St Peter's in Belton.

In the 1841 and 1851 censuses John was living with his family at Lambley Lodge:

Marriage and Emigration to America

John Thomas married Mercy STALEY in London in 1856 (registered at Lambeth, June quarter). The date of marriage is recorded on various family trees as 30 June but I suspect this is based on a date of 30 June 1862 in the old IGI database. This record is no longer available, suggesting the date was in error. John and Mercy emigrated to the United States, departing Southhampton on 1 September 1856 on the Palestine. He is shown as John T GOODLIFF, age 24 and a carpenter.

John and Mercy first settled in the town of New Rochelle, on the northern edge of New York, and close to the head of Long Island Sound. They are in the 1860 census with their young daughter Ida. The census also recorded the value of property owned at $600 and of personal estate at $100:

1860 census 1860 New York census

According to the 1900 census, John and Mercy had 8 children. I can only find the records for 6:

Name Birth Death
Ida 1858 before 1870

Elizabeth (Laura) 5 Feb 1868 31 Jan 1928
Clara Gertrude 6 Jan 1870 24 Oct 1924

Annette Florence 17 Aug 1876 30 Dec 1947
Harry Rufus 23 Aug 1880 13 Dec 1961

John became a naturalized citizen on 7 March 1865:

In 1870, John and family were still in New Rochelle. It would appear that Ida had died (although I cannot find a birth or death record for her), and they had a daughter Elizabeth Laura aged 2. Their property was now worth $8,000:

By 1880 the family had moved to Mamaroneck, a few miles to the north of New Rochelle. John was no longer a carpenter, but had become an "ice dealer".

1880
1880 census

With the growth of New York and other cities, the demand for ice grew. By 1880 New York and surrounding suburbs were requiring 1.5 million tons annually. All this ice was harvested from the Hudson River each winter, then stored in vast storehouses. Ice harvesters were being paid $1-$1.50 per day. Before the severe winter of 1880, the wholesale price of ice in mid-summer was up to $20/ton. After that winter, the price dropped to around $2/ton. There is more information about ice here. John would have been buying at that price then selling small blocks for home use.

In the 1900 census, the family were at Mamaroneck. This census shows that John and Mercy had 8 children, only 5 were still alive. Their son John Thomas was living with them with his wife Jennie and their son John T. Jnr. John senior was still an Iceman, and son John was a driver.

The children of John and Mercy GOODLIFFE

Elizabeth Laura GOODLIFFE (1868-1928)

Elizabeth Laura was born 5 February 1868 at New Rochelle, New York. She was recorded in the 1870 census as Elizabeth L. and in the 1880 census as Laura L. After this record Elizabeth seems to vanish. She is not in the 1900 census.

Clara Gertrude GOODLIFFE (1870-1924)

Clara Gertrude was born 6 January 1870 at New Rochelle, New York. She was recorded in the 1880 census with the family. The 1890 census records were destroyed by fire so we do not know where she was living. On 26 November 1891 she married Charles G. SAPORITO. Charles had been born in Salerno, Campania, Italy in June 1867 and emigrated to New York in 1887 or 1888.

Charles and Clara had one child - Florence Charlotte born 20 October 1893. The 1900 census recorded Charles and Clara as "SATORITO" and their young daughter as "Mary C" born October 1892, but the 1900 census also records that Charles and Clara had only one child, so we can conclude that Mary was in fact Florence.

Charles established a shoe shop in Mamaroneck, moving into 148 Mamaroneck Ave around 1900. He eventually owned the building and operated the shoe shop for many years. Charles eventually sold this "three-story brick business building" in May 1937 and it became a furniture shop. The building has since been demolished. But that was not the end of the family shoe business, as Charles soon assisted his son-in-law (Arthur TORRENCE) to open a new shoe shop across the road at 105 Mamaroneck Ave in September 1938.

Charles took his daughter Florence back to Italy in 1914 but it appears that their visit may have been cut short by the start of the war on 28 July 1914. However, Florence, as an American national, registered with the US Embassy.

Clara Gertrude SAPORITO died in Mamaroneck on 4 October 1924.

After Clara's death, Charles remained living in Mamaroneck. He sold the building housing the shoe shop at 148 Mamaroneck Ave in 1938 and assisted his son-in-law to open a new shoe shop across the road at 105 Mamaroneck Ave. Charles SAPORITO outlived Clara by 24 years, dying at Mamaroneck on 14 December 1948.

Florence Charlotte SAPORITO

Florence Charlotte was born 20 October 1893 in Mamaroneck to Charles and Clara. She was recorded with the family in various censuses up to 1920. Florence married Arthur Lawrence TORRENCE on 7 June 1921 at the Mamaroneck Methodist Church. Arthur had been born 25 March 1895 in Mamaroneck, NY.

John Thomas GOODLIFFE (1873-1944)

John Thomas was born at New Rochelle on 26 November 1873 to John and Mercy GOODLIFFE. He married Jane (Jennie) CUNNINGHAM (from Ireland) on 12 June 1896. They had 7 children:

John Thomas (Jnr) married Katherine (Kitty) SULLIVAN. They did not have any children. John was a long-time partner in the trucking business of J.T. Goodliffe Trucking and Moving Company. John died 18 May 1981 at the family home at 344 Florence St, Mamaroneck. His wife Kitty died 14 July 1985.

George Staley GOODLIFFE was born 12 July 1900 in Mamaroneck, NY. He attended Mamaroneck High School graduating in 1919 in the Latin-Scientific Course. But he joined the family ice business, in 1930 driving the ice wagon. By 1940 he was a "chauffeur" in the retail ice trade. George married Catherine BOHAN (born 1906 New York to John and Delia Fennell BOHAN) at Holy Trinity Church Mamaraneck on 26 November 1924. They had three children - Claire (30 Mar 1926-11 Oct 1931), George T. (1937-2016) and Joan Marie (6 May 1940-20 Jan 2018). In the 1940 census George and family were living at 412 Melbourne Ave, Mamaroneck.

Clifford John GOODLIFFE was born 1 September 1904 in Mamaroneck, NY. He was drafted into the Army in February 1942 and discharged in November 1944. He died in Mamaroneck on 2 June 1974 and is buried at the Greenwood Union Cemetery, NY. Apparently Clifford did not marry.

Ida Jane GOODLIFFE was born in 1907 in Mamaroneck, NY. She remained a spinster, living at Waverly Ave, continuing to live there after her father died in 1944. In 1950 she built her own house at 1208 Franklin Ave, Mamaroneck, where she died on 13 September 1957. She is buried at Greenwood Union Cemetery with her parents.

Adolph GOODLIFFE was born 6 February 1908 in Mamaroneck, NY. He married Elsie BALDWIN on 5 September 1931 in Mamaroneck. Elsie was the daughter of George and Alice BALDWIN. George was a horticulturist in Mamaroneck, who specialised in orchids, building up an international reputation for his orchid breeding. He has an orchid named after him - Cattleya George Baldwin, bred in 1941. [As an aside the Cattleya genus is named after William Cattley, my great-great-great-uncle!] Adolph and Elsie had two children: Joyce (1936) and John (1938). Adolph worked for his father's trucking business. In 1940 the family was living at Grand Ave, Mamaroneck.

The Children of Harry and Julia GOODLIFFE

Annette M. GOODLIFFE was born in 26 September 1904 at Mamaroneck, NY. She was recorded with the family in the 1905 to 1930 censuses. She attended Port Chester High School, leaving in 1923 to become a stenographer. Annette married the local butcher - Louis Carl HARTLIEB in Mamaroneck on 14 June 1937. Louis was the son of Louis and Marie (SCHWARNER) HARTLIEB, a butcher. Annette and Louis did not have any children.

Annette HARTLIEB (née GOODLIFFE) died in Port Chester on 21 September 1963 aged 58. Louis outlived her by 24 years, dying at the United Hospital Port Chester on 22 May 1987. Both are interred at Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye NY.

Robert Rufus GOODLIFFE was born 27 March 1915 at Mamaroneck, NY. He was recorded with the family in the 1925 to 1930 censuses. The 1940 census is confusing. Robert is shown as married with wife Annette Mary (the same name as his sister) but the age and place of birth for his wife is Connecticut. They also have a daughter - Joan, born about 1935. The confusion is cleared by looking at Robert's 1940 Army draft card which shows him married to Mary. There is a marriage record for Robert marrying Mary MAJEWSKA at Harrison NY on 26 March 1935. I suspect the "Annette" in the 1940 census was caused by confusion between daughter and daughter-in-law.

1940 census for Robert R, wief Mary and they daughter Joan GOODLIFFE.

1940 draft card for Robert GOODLIFFE.

However the marriage to Mary did not last very long. On 20 August 1946 Robert was plaintiff in the County Court of Washoe, Nevada seeking a divorce from Mary on the grounds of "extreme cruelty". Presumably this was granted as Robert next married Audry Rose WELCKER in New Orleans on 1 February 1947. Robert and Audry had four children - Robert Richard (1947), Douglas Stephen (1949), Gwendoline Ann (1951) and Jeffrey Charles (1953).

But this relationship appears to have failed as Robert Rufus next married Freida Juanita Mumme BURBRIDGE in July 1958 at Escambia, Florida. Freida was the daughter of George MUMME and Eva LUNDY, born 11 December 1927 at Jackson, Mississippi. Freida had been married previously to Earl BURBRIDGE. Robert and Freida lived in Mobile, Alabama. They appear to have had only one daughter - Michelle.

Freida Juanita MUMME/BURBRIDGE/GOODLIFFE died in Mobile, Alabama on 18 November 1994. Robert Rufus GOODLIFFE died 25 July 1999 at Mobile. Both are buried at Pine Crest Cemetery, Mobile.
