Fanny WOLFE (1865-1923)

Fanny was born in Nottingham on 9 May 1865 and baptised at Nottingham St Ann on 20 June 1869. She was recorded in the 1871-1891 censuses with the family. In 1901 she was working as a housekeeper in Cheshire. In 1905 Fanny joined her cousin (Fanny WOLFE) and her uncle Israel WOLFE for a voyage to Canada. She did not stay long as she is recorded in the 1911 census back with her parents at 2 Plowright St, Nottingham. There is a shipping record for a "Fannie WOLFE" returning to Liverpool from New York on the "Carmania" arriving on 24 November 1906.

Travel to New York and a marriage

In 1914 Fanny set sail overseas again, arriving at Ellis Island New York on 3 April 1914 onboard the SS Campania. Her occupation was "Lady's Companion" and her contact person in England was her father "Mr Wolfe, Woodborough Rd, Nottingham". Note that her father - Samuel WOLFE - died in late April 1914 just after Fanny had arrived in New York. She stated she was visiting her cousin Francis Harold WOLFE at 1276 Clay Ave, Bronx, New York (In fact Francis was Fanny's first cousin once removed). Fanny was accompanying a Dorothy Olive WHILES, a student aged 13, home address was of her grandmother Mrs GOTT of 5 Cooper St, Alfred St, Nottingham. Dorothy was to visit her father William WHILES at 212 East 54th St, New York. William had paid for her ticket. As Fanny's occupation was Lady's Companion it is likely that Fanny was actually accompanying Dorothy as a chaperone so Dorothy could visit her father.

Two weeks after Fanny's arrival in New York and the safe delivery of young Dorothy WHILES to her father William, Fanny (and William WHILES) applied for a marriage licence (dated 15 April 1914). They married on 17 April 1914 in the Bronx, New York. William was aged 48 and Fanny was 49 years.

But the marriage was short-lived. William WHILES died a year later in late May 1915 and was buried at Greenwood Cemetery on 30 May 1915 with his second wife Sarah Ellen and their daughter Winifred. Shortly after William's death his new wife Fanny and orphaned daughter Dorothy returned to England onboard the SS St Paul, arriving in Liverpool on 22 August 1915.

But the marriage to Sarah Ellen did not last. By 1891 William and son William were living with his mother Olivia at 76 Milton St, Nottingham, whereas Sarah Ellen and other son Arthur were boarding at 3 Victoria Place, Nottingham. On 8 February 1896 William filed for divorce, which was granted on 2 November 1896. You can view the divorce papers here in PDF format. William was in New York when the divorce papers were filed, returning to Liverpool on the Campania, arriving 7 March 1896. The divorce was widely reported in the newspapers.

Marriage to Sarah Ellen GOTT

Soon after arriving back in Nottingham William WHILES married Sarah Ellen GOTT. (Having the same name as his first wife has caused some confusion amongst family historians.) Sarah had been born in 1872 in Spalding, Lincolnshire to George GOTT and Eliza WILKINSON.

1897 marriage of William Henry WHILES

William Henry and Sarah Ellen (the second wife) had two children born in England - Hubert Sydney WHILES (1899-1899) and Dorothy Olive WHILES (1900-1918). In 1901 the family was living at 32 Sherwin Rd, Nottingham and William was a looking glass manufacturer. Soon, William returned to New York, where he was joined by Sarah Ellen and Dorothy in 1904. In New York they had a third child - Winifred May WHILES (14 Nov 1907 - 9 July 1908). Winifred was buried at Greenwood Cemetery on 11 July 1908 with her mother Sarah. Sadly, Sarah Ellen WHILES had died at the Norwegian Hospital, late of 218 Wakeman Place, New York on 3 January 1908. Cause of death was chronic endocarditis. But this marriage did not last long for William either. He died in late May 1915 and was buried at Greenwood Cemetery on 30 May 1915 with his second wife Sarah Ellen and daughter Winifred. Shortly after his death his new wife Fanny and orphaned daughter Dorothy returned to England onboard the SS St Paul, arriving in Liverpool on 22 August 1915.

Fanny after losing her husband

After travelling to New York to chaperone the young Dorothy WHILES; marrying Dorothy's father Whilliam WHILES two weeks after arriving, and then losing William a year later, Fanny returned to her mother in Nottingham. In 1921 she was living with her mother and her sister Elizabeth at 165 Woodborough Rd. She was recorded as "Fanny WHILES" now a widow. Fanny WHILES died in Nottingham in February 1929, aged 63 and was buried at Church (Rock) Cemetery, Nottingham, plot 11637 on 8 February 1929.
