THE FROGGATT FAMILY OF BREWHOUSE YARD:Earlier Generations in Clifton, Ashbourne & Norbury, DerbyshireBenjamin FROGGATT (1785-1862)****************THIS FILE HAS NOT BEEN EDITED YET*********************Humphrey FROGGATT was the sixth child of Hunphrey FROGGATT and Mary (BOLTON) of Clifton, near Ashbourne Derbyshire. He had six children from his first wife mary YATES and four more from his second wife Mary FROGGATT (possibly his cousin). This is the story of Humphrey's life, with links to the lives of his children.
(Note: you can read through each page, or you can follow the links for the people in the tree for more information on each one. There is a link at the bottom of each page to bring you back here!) Humphrey FROGGATT (1750-1805)Humphrey was born in mid-1750 in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. He was baptised on 10 June 1750 at Norbury St Mary. (The parish record does not show it to be a private baptism).
Humphrey appears to have married Mary YATES on 4 July 1775 at Ellastone, Staffordshire (there is no image of the parish register available). They soon returned to the Clifton, Ashbourne area where they had six children.
Death of Mary FROGGATTOn 8 June 1792 Humphrey baptised his son John at Ashbourne St Oswald; John had been born on 20 May 1792. On that same day he also buried his wife Mary (YATES).
Marriage to Mary FROGGATTThe death of Mary left Humphrey a widower with 4 children aged between 16 and 4 so it is not surprising that Humphrey soon found a new wife. He married Mary FROGGATT at Ashbourne St Oswald on 12 November 1794. Undoubtedly this Mary was a relative, but it is not obvious which one.
Humphrey and his new wife Mary had four children, all baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald. The parish register shows they lived in Green Lane, a country lane that runs southeast from Norbury and is about 10 miles from Ashbourne.
Humphrey died at Bridge Gate, Ashbourne and was buried at Ashbourne St Oswald on 20 July 1805. It is not clear what happened to Mary FROGGATT.
The Children of Humphrey FROGGATT and Mary (YATES)Thomas FROGGATT (1776-?)Thomas was born in 1776 in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. He was baptised at Norbury St Mary on 26 December 1776. Constructing Thomas' life is not easy as Thomas FROGGATT was a common name throughout all the various Froggatt families in Derbyshire and also in Sheffield and Yorkshire. The problem was compounded at the time by the need for many young people to venture away from the local area for work. I cannot be sure what happened to this Thomas FROGGATT. Some family trees have him marrying Esther GOODALL based on the burial and headstone for a Thomas and Esther at Ashbourne St Oswald. The problem with this is the age of Thomas at death - the burial register has him aged 51 and the headstone 55, so born around 1759-1763. Although there is a discrepency, the ages are consistent enough to make it very unlikely that the 1814 burial was of the Thomas born in 1776 (and thus aged only 38). We can also rule out Thomas (1776) marrying Sarah SALT in Mayfield in 1802 as Thomas' signature on this marriage is identical to the signature for the Thomas who married Esther GOODALL two years later. [On the balance of evidence I conclude the Thomas who married Ester GOODALL was born around 1766 to Thomas and Mary FROGGATT and baptised at Norbury on 22 June 1766.] There is more about the family of Thomas FROGGATT and his three wives hereHannah FROGGATT (1780-?)Hannah was born in 1780 in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. She was baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 14 May 1780. She married John DAY at Ashbourne St Oswald on 1 Oct 1802. The marriage was by licence, issued at Burton on 30 Sep 1802. They were married the next day at Ashbourne. The distance from Buxton to Ashbourne is about 19 miles. It is not clear what happened to Hannah and John after marriage. It appears they moved to Tutbury, Staffordshire (for work I presume). At Tutbury there are parish records for a burial and births for children with Hannah and John as parents. I cannot find a baptism for Hannah DAY who was buried at Tutbury on 19 April 1803. Either she was born soon after Hannah and John married, or she was a twin of her sister Ann but died before being baptised. After the baptism of Elizabeth the family appear to have moved from Tutbury but it is not clear where they went.
Benjamin FROGGATT (1785-1862)Benjamin was born on 1 May 1785 in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. He was baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 22 May 1785. Benjamin married Sarah EYRE at Stoke on Trent on 7 April 1817. Sarah had been born in Radborough, Derbyshire in 1795 to Samuel and Sarah EYRE.
After marriage Benjamin and Sarah moved from Barlborough to Radbourne and then to Calke. Benjamin was a farmer initially but by 1821 was a game keeper (presumably at Radbourne Hall). They had at least three children:
Census recordsBenjamin and Sarah appear in the eary census records. Death of Benjamin FROGGATTBy 1851 Benjamin was a pauper living at Findern village and by 1861 he was recorded as being blind. He died at Findern in November 1862 aged 77 and was buried at Twyford on 26 November 1862.
Death of Sarah FROGGATTSarah FROGGATT remained at Findern living with her daughter Mary DAKIN, as recorded in the 1881 census. Sarah died at Findern in January 1882, aged 86. She was buried at Findern All Saints on 9 January 1882.
Of the Children of Benjamin and Sarah FROGGATT Henry FROGGATT was baptised at Barlborough on 12 Sept 1819. He died in October 1840 aged 21 and was buried at Twyford Derbyshire on 19 October. Sarah FROGGATT was baptised at Radbourne St Andrew on 15 April 1821. In the 1841 census she was aged 19 and living with her parents at Twyford. Sarah married George MOORLEY at Duffield St Alkmund on 30 Jan 1842. George was a farm bailiff, born in 1814 at Aston on Trent to George and Mary MOORLEY.
George and Sarah had eight children:
In 1861 George, Sarah and family were living at Bilborough where George was a farm bailiff at Hall Farm. By 1871 Sarah had died and George was still the bailiff.
Sarah MOORLEY (née FROGGATT) died at Bilborough in 1870. George died in 1884. Mary FROGGATT was baptised at Calke St Giles on 1 July 1827. In the 1841 census she was living with her parents at Twyford. Mary married John DAKIN at Derby St Peter on 21 Mar 1848.John was a weaver and Mary a dressmaker.
John and Mary had three children, all baptised at Findern.
In 1851 John and Mary were living with Mary's parents, Benjamin and Sarah at Findern. By 1861 they had moved with their 3 sons to Chadderton in Lancashire where John was now a postman. Their son Samuel Morris died at Chadderton in 1869. Between 1871 and 1881 John retired and they moved back to Findern, Derby. In 1881 they had both mothers living with them. John died at Findern in 1890. In 1891 Mary was still living with her Mother-in-law but her own mother had died. In 1901 It is not clear when Mary DAKIN died. Elizabeth FROGGATT (1788-?)Elizabeth was born on 24 Jan 1788 in Clifton Lane Ashbourne to Humphrey and Mary and baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 6 Feb 1788. It is not clear what happened to Elizabeth after this. The Children of Humphrey FROGGATT and Mary (FROGGATT)Humphrey FROGGATT (1797-1888)Humphrey was born on 24 Oct 1797 at Green Lane in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary (FROGGATT). He was baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 5 Nov 1797. Humphrey married Sarah SCOTHERN at Ashbourne St Oswald on 24 Dec 1821. At that time Humphrey was a cotton spinner.
By 1851 Humphrey and Sarah were living at Bollington Rd, Bollington, Cheshire where Humphrey was now a labourer. They were accompanied by his son Richard and his family and a James FROGGATT who I think was a nephew. Humphrey and Sarah later went back to the cotton industry, working there until Sarah died in 1878 and Humphrey in 1888. Sarah FROGGATT died in Macclesfield in 1878 and Humphrey in 1888. The Son of Humphrey and Sarah FROGGATT Richard FROGGATT 1823-1900 was born in Ashbourne on 7 Nov 1823 and baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 28 December 1823. The family moved to Cheshire to work in the cotton industry. Richard married Sarah HOWARTH at Bollington in 1845. They had nine children. Richard worked in the cotton industry as a "warper". Sarah died around 1890. Richard then married Sarah SUTCLIFFE (a spinster aged 48) on 2 Sep 1893 at Littleborough Holy Trinity. They did not have any children. Richard died at 10 Bamford St, Littleborough on 19 Jun 1900. He left a Will valued at around £400. Sarah died at Rochdale in 1907. Ellen FROGGATT (1800-1816)Ellen was born on 17 Feb 1800 in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. She was baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 16 March 1800. Sadly, Ellen died at Bridge Gate, Ashbourne and was buried at Ashbourne St Oswald on 1 Sep 1816. William FROGGATT (1802-?)William was born on 4 Oct 1802 at Green Lane, Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. He was baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 14 Nov 1802. William probably married Lydia LUDLAM at Prestbury, Cheshire on 24 May 1833 as Banns were read for this couple at Ashbourne St Oswald on the preceeding Sundays. This MAY be the William born Clifton in 1802. Prestbury lies close to Bollington where William's siblings moved to work in the cotton trade so it is likely to be the right William. Unfortunately Lydia died in 1839, being buried at the Prestbury Chapely of Bollington on 1 June 1839. It appears that William and Lydia had one child - John - born and died in early 1839. He does not appear to have been baptised. After Lydia's death William is hard to locate with certainty. There are too many Wiliam FROGGATTs born around 1802. John FROGGATT (1805-1888)John was born on 2 March 1805 at Green L:ane, Ashbourne to Humphrey and Mary. He was baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 24 March 1805. It is most lilely that John married Mary Ann HANDLEY at Ashbourne St Oswald on 28 Jun 1824. The element of doubt in this marriage is that John would have been aged 19 at the time.
What happened to John and Mary? Unfortunately John was a common name at the time and there were several John and Mary FROGGATT families in Derbyshire and elsewhere. The only clue we have is a baptism at Matlock on 14 April 1833 for a William Handley FROGGATT to John and Mary. The middle name makes it almost certain that this John and Mary were the couple who married at Ashbourne in 1824. There is also the baptism of John to this couple at Matlock in 1835 with their usual address being Clifton, Derbyshire, again suggesting this is the same family. Assuming we have the correct couple, John and Mary had six children, all baptised at Matlock St Giles:
The family was recorded in the 1841 census at Stackholme, Matlock. John was absent but his mother Mary, aged 95, was living with them. There are several records for a John FROGGATT in the 1841 census but nearly all have family with them. The John at Clay Lane, North Wingfield (about 9 miles NE of Matlock) may be him.
Death of Mary Ann FROGGATTSome time after 1841 John and family moved to Bilston, Staffordshire where John became a miner. His wife Mary Ann FROGGATT died of Cholera at Bilston in 1849 and was buried at Bilston St Mary on 6 Sep 1849 aged 51. Their son Ebenezer had succumbed to Cholera a few days earlier.
Marriage to Ann SMITH/HIGGINBOTTOMThe year 1850 was eventful for John and family. First, John the widower, married Ann HIGGINBOTTOM the widow, at Bilston St Mary on 7 January 1850. Ann had been baptised as Ann SMITH on 15 Sep 1799 to Joseph and Jane SMITH at Bilston. Ann married Charles HIGGINBOTTOM, a miner, at Bilston in 1830; they had seven children at Bilston. Charles and their young son John died of Cholera; both were buried at Bilston on 10 Sep 1849.
Next his unmarried daughter Sarah gave birth to a daughter - Mary Ann - on 8 January 1850. But death had not finished with the family as young Mary Ann Handley FROGGATT died aged 3 weeks and was buried on 24 January 1850. (Note the Handley middle name on the burial confirms this is the correct family.)
By 1851 John, Ann and three of his sons had moved to Sedgeley, a short distance from Bilston where they were all coal miners. Ann had her son and daughter with her as well. The place of birth for John's three sons was listed as Matlock, confirming this is the correct family. In 1861 and 1871 John and Ann were still at Bilston and John was still working as a miner. In 1881 Ann was living with her daughter Sarah Ann GANDY at Bilston; she died there in September 1883. By 1881 John was being cared for in the Ashbourne Union Workhouse, where he died in 1888. He was buried at Ashbourne St Oswald on 28 Dec 1888. Of the Children of John and Mary Ann FROGGATT Elizabeth FROGGATT (1827-) was born in Matlock on 25 May 1827 and baptised at Matlock St Giles on 17 June 1827. She was recorded in the 1841 census with her mother at Starkholme, Matlock, aged 14 and working as a cotton spinner. She is not in the 1851 census with her parents so had married or died by this time. The marriage of Elizabeth to Thomas ALLWOOD at Matlock on 15 September 1845 is an obvious choice but this Elizabeth was aged 23 and the daughter of George FROGGATT. Not Caverswall, Stafford either, although the father was John occupation was potter. Sarah FROGGATT (1831-) was born on 1 January 1831 and baptised at Matlock St Giles on 20 Jan 1831. She was recorded in the 1841 census with her mother at Starkholme, Matlock, aged 10. She is not in the 1851 census with her parents. William Handley FROGGATT (1833-) was born in Matlock and baptised at Matlock St Giles on 14 April 1833. He was recorded in the 1841 and 1851 censuses with his parents.
John FROGGATT (1835-1918) was born 4 July 1835 and baptised at Matlock St Giles on 2 Aug 1835. The baptism record suggests he was born in Clifton, Ashbourne where his parent's families were living. John was recorded in the 1841 and 1851 censuses with his parents. John married Sarah HARRIS(S) at Wolverhampton St George on 27 May 1855, both being recorded as "minors": indeed John would have been 19. John and Sarah had 3 children but all three died young. John's headstone records only Martha Elizabeth, the "only child" of John and Sarah but in fact the birth and baptism records tell us they had three children. The census and baptisms also tell us John was a miner, but by 1865 he was working as a grocer in Hall St, Bilston. Later he learned the galvanising and "japanning" trade and owned the works at Oxford St, Bilston.
Census recordsTheir daughter Martha Elizabeth FROGGATT died at BIlston on 31 August 1875 and was buried at Bilston Cemetery on 6 September 1875 in a plot bought by John and Sarah. But 18 months later Sarah FROGGATT died in Bilston and was buried at Bilston Cemetery on 18 January 1877 along with their daughter Martha Elizabeth.
Soon after the loss of his wife Sarah, John married Elizabeth LLOYD at Bilston. John was 42 and Elizabeth was 34, having been born in Sedgeley in 1843. John and Sarah did not have any children. In 1881 John took over the licence of the "Wheat Sheaf" inn in OXford Street, Bilston. John ran an engineering business doing galvanising and "Japanning" the technique of giving metal a black finish. He emplyed several men, but in 1890 he sued one of them for walking off the job. In 1891 one of them lost three fingers in an accident and was awarded £60..
Death of John FROGGATTJohn FROGGATT died at "Fair View", Wellington Rd Bilston on 1 July 1918. His Will was valued at £9795. He was buried at Bilston Cemetery, Wolverhampton, along with his first wife Sarah and his daughrter Martha Elizabeth, who died in 1875. His second wife Elizabeth (LLOYD) died at Fair View, Bilson on 9 April 1925. Thomas FROGGATT (1840-) was born at Stackholme, Matlock and baptised at Matlock St Giles on 25 Oct 1840. He was recorded in the 1841 and 1851 censuses with his parents. Thomas married Ann WHITMORE at Ettingshall Holy Trinity, Wolverhampton on 26 December 1859 (Ettingshall is about 2 miles from Bilston). Ann claimed to be aged 20 and Thomas 21 but they were in fact only 18 and 19.
In the 1861 census Thomas and Ann and young daughter Mary Ann were living with Thomas' father John at 3 William St Bilston, where Thomas was working as a coal hewer. By 1871 they had their own house at Bristol St Bilston where they now had 3 more children, although Mary Ann had died. Thomas and Ann had 6 children altogether. Five were born in Bilston, Wolverhampton but the last, Ebenezer, was born in Spatslade, Trentham, Stoke on Trent where Thomas was a coal miner.
Thomas and Ann are absent from the 1881 census and the children are scattered, indicating Thomas and Ann had died by this time. Indeed, Thomas died in June 1873 and was buried at Dresden, near Stoke on Trent and Ann died in 1879 and was buried 22 March at Dresden, Staffordshire. That left four children still alive, ranging in age from 6 to 19.
Of the Children of Thomas and Ann FROGGATT Thomas FROGGATT (1862- ): was born in Bilston in 1862 and was with the family in 1871. In 1881, after his parents had died, he was working in a pottery and boarding at 28 Goddard St, near Stoke on Trent. In 1883 Thomas enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment. It appears he had received a notice requiring him to enlist and to attend annual traing camps. He was discharged from the Army on 12 July 1889. In 1886 Thomas married Mary FENN at Wolverhampton. A few months later their first child - Thomas - was born on 11 August and baptised at Wolverhampton St Patrick Catholic Church on 5 September.
After 1901 Thomas and Mary are hard to find. In 1911 three of the sons (Thomas, Edwin and Martin) were boarding together at 52 Wall Lane, Wednesfield. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
